BALLOON ATRIAL SEPTOSTOME

Definition:- 

To improve blood flow through the fetal heart during development, a balloon atrial septostomy surgery is performed to create a hole in the wall between the top chambers of the fetal heart. It usually close shortly after birth.  

Benefits: Making the hole larger and increasing the amount of blood to transfer to the lung.

REQUIRED TEST

Before the balloon atrial septostomy procedure, there are some tests required:

  •  Electrocardiogram
  • Some blood tests.
  • X-Ray (chest).
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).
  • CT-scan.
  • ECHO (Cardiogram).

COMPLICATIONS

There are some complications in the balloon atrial septostomy procedure, but they’re very rare. It can be:
