INTRODUCTION:
Harsha Jauhari Dr. B.C. Roy National Award (2016) was given to him by the Honorable President of India.
Diplomate in Medical Ethics & Law, M.S. (Gen. Surg.), F.R.C.S., F.I.C.S., F.A.I.S., Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, 1968–1972, M.S. (Gen. Surg.) from G.S.V.M. Medical College, Kanpur, 1973–1976; elected F.R.C.S. in 1983.On the Institute of Urology’s request, the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom granted him the Dr. P.N. Berry Trust Scholarship so that he could pursue training in transplant surgery. He went back to India in 1988 with the intention of helping the nation, first establishing transplant programs in Delhi, then in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Almost 6000 renal transplants and 3500 C.A.P.D. catheter insertions—possibly the greatest series in India—are to his credit. Furthermore, he has presented over 200 original publications, surgical innovations, and lectures at national and international forums covering a range of transplantation-related topics. The focus of the last few years has been on raising awareness of the ethics, laws, and necessity of organ donation related to transplantation. For the past 31 years, he has served as Chairman and Senior Consultant in the Department of Renal Transplant Surgery at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. Over the past ten years, he has also been in charge of the transplant services at the Artemis Health Sciences Institute in Gurgaon, Haryana. He has served as the Noida Medicare Centre’s Head of Renal Transplant Services in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
At government-registered centers across three states, he was the trailblazer in initiating successful renal transplant surgery programs. Since 2014, he has served as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s advisor on organ transplantation in India. He has also contributed to the creation of the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP) and the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). He is an integral part of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare’s advisory and expert groups on renal disease, dialysis, and transplantation. He was specifically named by the Hon’ble Delhi High Court in 2004 to serve on a High Powered group that reviewed the terms of the Transplantation of Human Organ Act (1994) and its regulations. The committee’s members included the Director General of Health Services, the Health Secretary of the Government of India, and others. He made a significant and essential contribution to this. One of his many suggestions was to establish a National Organ Transplant Program. This is currently in its second phase of implementation and is operational.
