INTRODUCTION:

Known for his clinical expertise and extensive involvement with cardiac care for children in India and other developing countries, Dr. Krishna Iyer is one of the top pediatric cardiac surgeons in India. In 1995, he launched the first paediatric cardiac care programme in Northern India at the Escorts Heart Institute Research Centre (now Fortis-Escorts Heart Institute), which was a groundbreaking initiative. Under his direction, this pediatric cardiac program has emerged as the standard for pediatric cardiac treatment throughout India and its neighbors in Southeast Asia. More than 10,000 infants, kids, and adults with congenital heart conditions have had surgeries performed by Dr. Iyer. These surgeries include arterial switch operations, double switch operations, TAPVC repairs, Fontan and Fontan-type procedures, corrections for tetralogy of Fallot, DORV, Truncus, and other conditions; conduit repairs; Senning operations; and a variety of one- and multi-stage corrections for complex congenital heart diseases. He is credited with creating the rapid two-stage arterial switch technique and carrying out the first successful double-switch and rapid two-stage arterial switch operation in India. His current areas of interest include establishing cost-effective cardiac treatment for children in underdeveloped nations, saving late-presenting cases of congenital heart disease, and perfecting complicated neonatal cardiac surgery and cardiac surgery in malnourished infants and children. When he moved to Escorts Heart Institute to establish its pediatric cardiac care branch, he was an Additional Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at AIIMS, where he had previously received basic training. In 1989, he became a Senior Fellow in the Department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, where he received training in paediatric and infant cardiac surgery from the acclaimed paediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. R.B.B. Mee. He participates in numerous charitable endeavors for disadvantaged kids, chief among them being Rotary International’s ‘Gift of Life’ initiative.
